Web based project management tool

I am looking for a web based project management system including time tracking for multiple users and billing.

Please let me know if you have something to recommend.

  1. this is a lot more basic, but I love it: http://www.slimtimer.com/
It doesn’t yet offer billing, but you can export the time sheets, or just create your own invoices using another another tool like Google docs.

  2. i recommend basecamp for project management – free if you handle just one.

then blinksale integrates beautifully with basecamp for invoicing.

    true and tried combo.

I don’t know about the previous suggestions, it seems they didn’t really use them for real work. sugarcrm has lots of features but it takes 2 weeks to set it up and make it ready for daily use. slimtimer is not a complete tool . journyx is unusable for multi-users and takes even more time than sugarcrm to setup.

  3. Funny that Heri should post that, I was just looking at this list on 37Signals’ site which shows all the apps that interface with Basecamp, including budgeting, time tracking and invoicing. Could get quite expensive though.

  4. yes, it gets really expensive for small businesses, and it seems like there is not ‘one’ app filling all budget, timetracking and invoicing all in one…

  5. just spent 2 days doing research on this exact topic . I was looking for a groupware solution to support a geographically distributed team of designers and developers:
    – project management (hierarchical task trees, task dependencies, Gantt charts, milestones)
    – time tracking
    – issue / bug management and tracking
    – calendar
    – to dos
    – document sharing
    – user / group level permissions

Of course being a small team it had to be free.
Also keep in mind that this is based on web research only and not actual implementation of any of these products. It’s the next step.

    Results:
    HOSTED SERVICES

1st and only place: http://www.wrike.com/ is very basic but clean and functional

SELF-HOSTED PRODUCTS – if you have your own server you can download and install any of the solutions below.

1st place: http://www.phprojekt.com – very complete open source solution by a German team. (note: their site language selector doesn’t hold the session so you need to keep pasting the language parameter into the url).

2nd place: http://www.tutos.org – got the same impressive feature set but not as polished as PHProjekt

3rd place: http://www.activecollab.com – is a free clone of Basecamp. more advanced functionality is missing (time, issue tracking) but it’s clean and easy

curious mention: Groupware and collaboration solution plugin for Joomla by Mambo Assistance.
    http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,724/Itemid,35/
If you’re planning to build your team site in Joomla (arguably the most balanced site framework out there) this is worth a look. It appears to be based on Tutos. There’s not much user attention to this plugin on the Joomla site (no ratings) and it is a pain to find information about the plugin on Mambo Assistance website http://www.mamboassistance.com (you got to create a free account and then search for ‘groupware’). But for the right situation this can be a very compelling solution.

    Remarks:
I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of products available in all shapes, sizes, and scopes. From the full ERP systems to stand alone time trackers. I found that the products above fit well into a very specific niche of small/medium size software/web development team. Although they all come with their own document repository features I would not use them for you source control. A dedicated source control system is still a must. We have settled on Bazaar as it was built to be fully distributed and can support our team much better than the centralized CVS / Subversion repositories ever could.

    Hope this helps.
