As Evan wrote, we might give a try to traveling to NYC by train next time we go there. Its a long trip (9 to 10hrs) but much comfortable than the plane or car, and cheaper as well.

I took that train on January. It is long but it is a confortable ride with a great view out the window. The seats were big and it was pretty empty so you could get two seats (or even 4 if you got in first). Every seat has a power outlet so you can plug in your laptop, but I don’t know if they offer wi-fi (not for free at least). The border officers were nice too, way nicer than the ones on the airport.
And not only it is cheaper, but you arrive downtown, so you save the money for the cab from the airport.
Yes the train is relaxing and rather enjoyable. That said the near-10-hour ride is a bit long. I’m going to NYC next week.. but I opted for plane since I have extra Aeroplan miles. Saved me that time!
