Wahoo! Audiogram’s 55 artists / 107 albums are now on Bluetracks.ca

I haven’t written on M-C’s blog for a while… I now have a gorgeous 5 months old daughter and therefore I have been a bit busy posting photos on Facebook and changing diapers. Maybe I’ll find a way to post a photo to you soon but for now – I have another amazing thing to say to you and that is that we finally have Audiogram’s catalogue on Bluetracks.ca! It was not an easy thing to do. Since early 2004, we have been patiently waiting for them to come around and accept to take the plunge and join our Independent and DRM-free MP3 online music store… very radical! So it’s done! They are now with us! I’m very happy about it. Here is their artist list :

Dépendance de l’indépendant

Si vous avez écouté les nouvelles de Radio-Canada et autres sources ces derniers jours vous savez alors peut-être que Local Distribution a de graves difficultés financières en ce moment. 150 000 $ de dette à éponger pour ne pas déclarer faillite. Local Distribution est un distributeur pour les artistes émergents et petites maisons de disque indépendantes. Plusieurs artistes passent par Local distribution à leur débuts, incluant DobaCaracol, Les Chiens, DJ Champion et autres. D’autres font toujours partie de leur distribution : Les Frères Goyettes, Maxime Robin, Les Prostiputes, etc.

En tant que cofondatrice de Bluetracks.ca, j’ai contacté la conseillère de la ministre de la Culture et des communications pour lui communiquer l’importance de Local Distribution, non seulement pour les producteurs de musique indépendante, mais pour nous! Bluetracks.ca est un magasin équitable de musique indépendant en ligne dont le catalogue dépend énormément de Local Distribution. La fermeture de Local représenterait pour nous une perte énorme et dont les conséquences seraient très difficiles à surmonter.

Les Démos Bluetracks débutent leur 4ième saison ce mois-ci (février 2007). Avec l’émission de télévision Baromètre, nous acceptons les démos des artistes et groupes indépendants ‚Äì afin de les soumettre au vote du public ‚Äì puis au vote du jury. C’est un événement sans fla-fla et extrêmement populaire. Nous recevons près de 100 démos à chaque saison. Alors si jamais vous aviez envie de soumettre un démo… c’est le temps! Making up for Ironik

My job as Bluetracks.ca cofounder is to grow our business ‚Äì with very little resources ‚Äì and with the tools I have at hand. Our programmer had developed a simple tool that allowed me to send Bluetracks Bulletin in which I would give some news but mostly give visibility to certain artists and free songs to people. Just before Christmas, the Bulletin sending tool was updated ‚Äúto be better that ever‚Äù and our last Bulletin of the year never got out. It just did not work. I tried not to cry over the matter and just keep it cool, saying that there was nothing I could do but wait until the tool was debugged (now, our programmer just had his first baby so it won’t get fixed very promptly). The thing is that I felt bad for the artist that I was promoting in that issue as his song was the perfect song to give away at the end of the year. To make up for this mishap, here it is for you to download if you wish ‚Äì It’s hip hop/rap in French and the artist name is Ironik:

Noël Noël

J’ai déjà passé un No√´l en Isra√´l, à Jérusalem. Pas par conviction religieuse mais parce que je vivais en Isra√´l dans un contexte d’échange étudiant international. J’ai été frappé par le fait qu’en Isra√´l, même à Jérusalem, No√´l n’existe pas. Bien sûr il y a les messes, mais pas de publicités de No√´l, pas de lumière de No√´l, pas de bûches de No√´l… Donc pas de No√´l comme à Montréal.

Vous avez sûrement entendu plusieurs chansons de No√´l avec des paroles comme : ” Do they know it’s Christmas time at all ” – on pourrait s’amuser à changer les paroles pour ” Do they know it’s Hannukah time at all “… Mais sans penser que No√´l est une chose universelle et absolue, j’aime bien cette fête annuelle. Ce que j’aime c’est que c’est un moment de l’année pour plusieurs dans mon entourage de tradition culturelle judéo-chrétienne, pour se réunir et pour se faire plaisir. Il faut dire que j’aime beaucoup le plaisir; le plaisir d’être avec des gens qu’on aime, le plaisir de bien manger et le plaisir de bien rire.

J’aimerais partager un peu de plaisir avec vous en vous invitant à découvrir des chansons de No√´l qui m’ont fait rire justement. Quand un artiste ajoute ses chansons sur le catalogue de musique de Bluetracks.ca, parfois j’en écoute un peu, pour valider ou pour découvrir. Quand j’ai écouté les chansons de No√´l de Dan Foley, je ne savais pas au début si c’était une blague ou ” pour de vrai “. Bref, j’ai beaucoup ri. À votre tour de rire un peu : Dan Foley fredonne No√´l

Hello, my name is Monica

M-C very kindly invited me to write on her Blog. Seeing my nervousness about being interesting, she reassured me, asking me to simply write about the new artists and new music I get on my online store. Easy!

My business partner and I have developed a fair trade music store where independent artists of all genres are able to upload their music themselves, set their own prices and basically control everything to do with their music. This means that I see a lot of new music as I work on the store’s catalogue. But that’s the problem for me – music has become work and that’s why I’m afraid of being boring! (Plus the fact that I can be terribly serious.)

So here is what I told myself – I’ll just be me. I’ll tell you about the artists I get to know and their music, but from my perspective (hard to do otherwise of course, but what I mean is that I won’t even pretend to be objective!). I’ll probably also tell you about fair trade, accessibility, democracy and the power of solidarity because that’s how I run my music store – I don’t do it for the music, I do it for the people that love music, which means almost everyone.

Without music, life would be a mistake (Friedrich Nietzsche).
