Gillman Auction on Saturday
If you’ve spent any time wandering up and down Duluth Street, you’ve probably spotted what you thought was a deserted store with a bright turquoise-green interior, frozen in time. The story is a little more complicated than that.
77 rue Duluth was owned by a certain Mr. Gillman, who was a fixture of the neighbourhood for many, many years. He supplied local businesses with wholesale goods and sundry sweets until a couple of years ago, when his health took a turn for the worse. He recently passed away and now his space is being transformed, but his memory lives on.
The new owner, Binky Holleran, will install the second incarnation of her Fuschia café in the space, but not before celebrating it with artistic interventions and a documentary about P. Gillman’s life (if you knew Mr. Gillman and have some memories to share, she invites you to drop by Fuschia Wednesday to Saturday between noon and seven, or drop a note in the mail slot). To help raise funds for this heritage do-gooding, Binky is hosting an auction of the curios left behind, such as the beautifully-package vintage Noxema product pictured below.
A couple of weeks ago, Montreal artist Sarah Wendt performed a contemporary dance piece/living installation of sorts to celebrate the space. After her final performance, there was a fund-raising event with music, of which I snapped a few photos (with my ISO-challenged camera). Click on the pics below for the respective photo sets.
BYOB, Critical Mass & Diskfunction

Tinkerers take note: today is your last chance to get your automaton on by submitting your creation–however elementary–to Elektra for their upcoming Robo_Coop robotic improv night. Details and a link to the very short entry form here.
The rest of us can see our future overlords in action at Usine C on March 3rd as part of the Montreal All-Nighter.
Critical mass flash mob todaynext Wed on Mont-Royal
UPDATE: Just got an email saying they have rescheduled for Wednesday February 21…
Bipeds are going for critical mass at the corner of Mont-Royal Ave and St-Hubert today next Wednesday at 4 pm. It’s a social-awareness happening brought to you by the Maximum 30 committee and seconded by the good folks at Mont-Royal Avenue Verte, champions of a car-free pedestrian Ave. The idea is to cross the street repeatedly at rush hour (while obeying traffic lights and showing respect for drivers and passers-by) in order to raise awareness about the Plateau’s growing traffic congestion and drivers who act like they are on the Circuit Villeneuve.
Diskfunction & Mutek present Junction SM this Friday
Since a little dance floor action is a sure cure for the mid-winter blahs, you might want to head over to Academy Club this Friday night. Junction SM, aka Sonja Moonear and Dandy Jack, are back in town, having played the Mutek festival last June. It’s more than just sweet beats, however, as you will discover after observing the subtle yet complex interaction at work. Dandy Jack improvises compositions with loops and samples on his laptop, the output of which is fed into Sonja’s DJ mixer. She then combines it with vinyl sources in a free-flowing collaborative dynamic that will make even the keenest trainspotter’s head spin… at 130 bpm.
Passwords are mantras
I attended a highly-stimulating tech startup conference in Quebec City yesterday and Friday. I’ll be posting some insights on Tuesday once I’ve had a chance to go through and digest my notes.
In the meantime, two questions: 1) When was the last time you changed your important passwords? 2) How are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions? If it’s been ages since you renewed your passwords and you’re starting to lose sight of those early-January good intentions, here’s a way to improve both situations.
How many times a day do you input your various passwords? Have you ever considered that, given the frequency with which we repeat them, passwords are a lot like silent mantras? What if, instead of using something random, you were to create a message for yourself and use it as your password? Or several messages for each of your key passwords?
Since good passwords avoid dictionary words, take the first letter of each word in a phrase that is something you need to remind yourself to be or do. For added security, include some numbers and punctuation marks (colon, exclamation mark, etc) and make some of it in uppercase letters if the password format allows it. The longer the phrase, the stronger the password.
Spend a few weeks with your new mantra(s), see if anything changes in your life and post a comment here.
Rechercher Victor Pellerin

If you’re in the mood for a film tonight or tomorrow, head over to Ex-Centris and take in Missing Victor Pellerin while it’s still showing on the big screen. The only Quebecois film in official competition at the 35th edition of Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, the film received a Jury’s Special Mention and praise from critics. An artful fusion of documentary and fiction, filmmaker Sophie Deraspe’s feature-length film debut offers an intriguing reflection on truth and its counterpart, invention.
Paper Bag 02 @ Madame Edgar
Guest posting by Duncan for Vu d’ici (English below)

Tonight is the the 2nd edition of Paperbag, an art show of designs made on brown paper bags. There’s a silent auction that will continue on the Web for a week. The show itself ends December 23rd.
Sadly, it’s the last showing at Madame Edgar, because madame has decided to shutter up the storefront in favour of focusing all energies on producing a variety of designer objects. So while the boutique may be closing, we can look forward to more stationery, designer toys and objects, and the always interesting paperjam online magazine.
Duncan @ Vu d’ici
(English blurb below…)
Ici Duncan.
Hey, readers of Vu d’ici! Duncan here. MC asked me if I’d like to collaborate occasionally on her blog, and I happily agreed. So who am I? Well, you’ll find quite a few clues on my blog, but the gist of it is that I’m originally from British Columbia and have been living in Quebec for 12 years now. I learned French here and work as a freelance writer/translator–mostly in communications, Web and the digital arts. What am I into? Too many things at the same time, really–as you will quickly learn from the eclectic nature of my posts! On that note, you’ll be hearing from me very soon…
