We should be keeping people out of stores but we all have to work with business

Morals
The cultural adventure has been consumed by business. Making things better is a moral issue, but morality and business don’t go together - business is, if not immoral, then amoral. We know we should be keeping people out of stores but we all have to work with business. It can’t really be all about idealism and altruism.

Where are the NGOs?
Everyone does their best but you have to pay the rent. Even hospitals have to run to profit. You can’t avoid the issue merely by working for an NGO - even Amnesty and Greenpeace have to be “business facing”. The only bastion of free speech could be the art world, but even that is a preciously engineered marketplace with its own complexities.

Value finding
Creative people have to believe in the value of their work. If you don’t have any belief then you can’t give anything - designing is an act of giving, and a belief in the value of the work fuels the desire to express something. It’s important to know what your values are and to take care of them.

Post-war socio-cultural democratisation
It’s a long term, but broken down it’s simple. Over the last 50 years culture has been disseminated to the wider public rather than being the domain of the privileged. There is an inevitable loss of substance in the process of becoming a culture of entertainment. If it’s not popular, it’s not happening.

Design as drugs
Pop culture used to be like LSD - different, eye-opening and reasonably dangerous. It’s now like crack - isolating, wasteful and with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

The new cause
I was part of a system that wanted to change the look of the everyday world. That ideal, manifest through consumerism, doesn’t sit well with me now. I am not wealthy and completely understand how we all have to pay our way.

New work

L'histoire (detail)

As some of you already saw, i have added most of my artwork to flickr. I think flickr is the best way for my art to be seen, and shared.

You can see the complete sets of my portfolio here,

Here you will find some of my collages,
here some of my illustrations,
here some of my paintings,
here some fashion illustration.

Some of these you can buy on my Etsy shop.

* * *

Most of these pieces where done a while ago, i need time to now market this art, send portfolios to editors and possible agents, and so on. I feel confident that fall and the upcomming winter will be a good ground for creating more stuff, and finding my way to market my art.

At Eighty-two, May Sarton

At Eighty-two, May Sarton

I met May Sarton through her last book, a diary from her 82nd year. I discovered that she let behind about 10 other diaries, and the book from which i heard most often of her, Journal of a Solitude.

I love diaries, i feel so lucky to be able to get into someone else’s life, life of another time, someone of another age. I felt so close, like being a watching companion over her life, and her being a companion to me for the days i was reading the diary.

As she writes,

“We are all getting older, travel less, and in some ways these journals are like long letters, telling much of what i have done and thought in a whole year”

so i felt compeled to get to know more about how it feels to be May Sarton, at 82, with the solitude, the images and memories fading behind, the good moments, the fighting against depression and frustration, the constant struggle to keep things up, and the despair about the idea of leaving things unfinished…

“… Now i know that this business of being May Sarton will never be sorted out…”

I wish, or hope she knew, that as a woman of another time, i am deeply grateful for her sharing of her life, with such humility and sensibility.

Creacamp, salle et projecteur

i think often that’s how creativity arises, in having to deal with things in the moment. the fact that some plans you have don’t work out the way you wanted or “planned” forces you into a new way of seeing and operating.

Yesterday entry, from Keri’s blog

Well, let’s see how this is gonna turn out. I’v got no projector, and i might now have no room for Creacamp planned this saturday. I’ve got a cold, and i’ve got no energy to fight, so let’s see which solution will come our way…

* * *

Shit happens

Chris went to the atelier yesterday, and found it completely devastated - filled with tar powder all around.

The roof of the building was redone this week, and most of the top floor studios have been damaged like ours.

With Creacamp coming this saturday i have no idea how to solve this - if anyone can recommend a place, i’ll know ’till thursday if we can use the atelier or not. For now, i prefer forget about it.

Handreading and contemporary kitchen art

Handreading

I took this picture spontaneously (like i most of the time do!) realizing that my hand was also reading May Sarton’s 82 years old journal.

Stacked colors

I love the sculptures, always different ones, created by our clean dishes. Still, this does not make dishes cleaning more fun.

Have a niche, chilly fall weekend!

Holidays final wrap up: Florence, Italy

Breakfast, people watching, Bastia port

I think what i miss the most from our holidays is the café au lait, bread and croissants breakfasts, taken outside at the port, under the sun. Such a classic for France, i wish i could find a place offering these classy breakfast over here in Montreal.

Breakfast

We spent the last days of the holidays with a short stop in Florence, Italy. Something we regretted later since Florence was over crowded with tourists all around.

Appart from the good food (italian - yum!) we havn’t found any cool place to chill and spend some time, appart from this outside gem found in the middle of nowhere…

Here i close my picture album for this holidays. There are much more pictures from this trip, you can see the full picture album here. Chris is also posting some pictures over here.

Exemples :
- celles-ci sont de stirnemann sur un site qui présente vraiment beaucoup d’artistes (voir la colonne de droite);

Artsy, fake fat

Some more discoveries, this time from Etsy. A little research on ElasticCo, from whom i bought the beautiful flower hat. This was an interesting discovery following my Adieu Madonna entry - i must say, i’d rather wear elasticCo’s stuffed accessories and become a living sculpture than having my body modified by surgery :

Cartoon Culture Cartoon Culture

“… Elodie makes accessories which change the body and challenge our idea of beauty. These accessories create a way of transforming oneself through more than clothes, of finding a different way of expressing beauty. Layers of cotton are strapped to the body to form extra padding on the hips and stomach, areas which women often try to hide. Large cotton pads are attached directly to a bra, whilst smaller pads can be tied around the stomach and back and even under arms. This is a tongue-in cheek comment on the fashion for breast implants and surgical enhancement. Gloves, which have long black nails, may at first seem impractical, but one can easily take them off. …”

More on ElasticCo’s website.

Discoveries

Saturday morning browsing, i discovered :

- more creatives girls’n blogs, photography & cooking blog, drawing, smosch;

- that i should soon visit more of sweden, and re-visit Copenhague to have a coffee in one of these place where in chilly weather you get a blanket to wrap around :

- that i am not the only one fancying coffee cups - i travel the world to bring back new ones :

Corsica round up

082220061065.jpg

Our third day in corsica was devoted to nature walking, which sounded good to me since i had enough of sitting in the car, mountain viewing, and feeling both car and mountain sick.

Here you’ve got a picture of Chris, who was much faster than I at climbing, and clearly enjoying this nature walk MUCH more than i did. I wish this did not happenened to me, but as far as i understood, it is at that moment that i realized after being in this world for 32 years that my body cant stand being higher than 1000 feet. What i thought was car sickness turned out to be my body telling me that this was way too high for me. So i gave up, waited with my dizziness in the middle of nowhere for Chris to climb a little higher so he could get back with a feeling of satisfaction. Scary.

later time for a beer, the local Petra.

Ending the day with somethign which better fits me, a candle light dinner in Bastia’s port.

I will continue posting pictures about our trip in the following days, you can see the full picture album here. Chris is also posting some pictures over here.
