Universal Music’s catalog available for free legal downloading

NEW YORK (Reuters) – SpiralFrog, a new music download service, on Tuesday said it would make Vivendi’s Universal Music Group’s catalog available for free legal downloading in the United States and Canada.

The new advertising-supported service, due to launch later this year, joins the ranks of rivals battling for a piece of the digital music market in the shadow of Apple Computer Inc’s (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) dominant iTunes music store.

Good idea. To bad there’s a catch. One, users will have to watch 90 sec ads to get to the music. Two, songs cannot be burned to blank CD. And three, songs will be in unfriendly non-Ipod format coded as WMA files.

“And three, songs will be in unfriendly non-Ipod format coded as WMA files.” I would say the Ipod format is as proprietary as the WMA format.

iPod file format vs. WMA file format. True, they are both propriertary formats. I guess my point is that if people were hoping to transfer these downloads to their iPods, they will be out of luck.
