Jean makes a good point, but you can equally well turn that around and say that our homegrown culture industry has turned out a “monoculture crop.” It seems like the two French daily newspapers are fairly conservative in their outlook and in the topics they cover – I always get a sense of over-seriousness (self-importance?) from them. They become a kind of self-reinforcing echo chamber, they don’t cover anything new unless they are forced to. I think it extends out of that hothouse literary-establishment thing. I once tried to sell some book cover designs to a small-press French publishing house and they weren’t interested, if they had anything more exciting than a white cover with some text on it they “wouldn’t be taken seriously” in the industry. So it seems they were publishing books not for readers but for reviewers and other people in the book business.
